This is a scarce example earlier restrike Austria Maria Theresia Taler, frozen date 1780, restruck 1788 - 1790 AD in Karlsburg (Transylvania), Silver, Weight: 27.88g, Diameter: 42.17mm. Leypold catalog number T12, Hafner 1. Old wiped. VF+/EF.

Obverse: Veiled and draped bust of Maria Theresia right, wearing perl-brooch. No mintmaster´s initials below.
Legend: M . THERESIA . D . G . R . IMP . HU BO . REG .

Reverse: Crown above double headed imperial eagle, large multiple coat of arms with three crowns and lion.
Legend: ARCHID . AVST . DUX . BURG . CO . TYR . 1780 . X
Comment: Initials of Karlsburg (A.H. - G.S.) below.

There are 2 varieties, i.e. Halfner 1a (small signature) and Halfner 1b (large signature). This specimen with large signature therefore it should be Halfner 1b. However, there are different in several details such as the large crown above two eagles' head (this specimen's crown is close to Halfner 1a), size of year 1780 (close to 1b) etc...

This specimen is the first and earliest listed in the Walter Hafner, "Lexicon of the Maria Theresien Taler 1780", 1984, and No. T12 in Dr. Franz Leypold, "Der Maria Theresien Taler 1780 (Levantetaler)", 1976. It has a stunningly low mintage of only 40,000 pieces, which is very low compared to the c. 800 million (many inexpensive recent re-strike anywhere) which were issued worldwide until today.
